Who:  All Lone Bear Scout Troops and LB 2nd year Webelos. Out -of-district troops may make a request for attendance by contacting the event chair.

What: Klondike fun and games...

Where:  H Roe Bartle Scout Reservation - Camp Piercing Arrow

When:   Fri, Sat, and Sunday - Feb 17- 18- 19, 2012

Why:  Fun - Campfire - individual and troop competition- Small troop? no problem, patrols will be judged on overall performance and not large numbers - Troop pride - Show it!

Events go on RAIN or SHINE...(it will rain or snow?...be prepared)

Go from town to town on your "dog drawn sled" and work as a team on Scout skills. Go to the rough and rowdy gambling town of Dawson and earn gold nuggets or chips, or visit frontier towns of Chilkoot Pass, White Horse, Skagway and more.

Rules and general information......

A brief overview of the rules will be distributed at the January Roundtable. Full rules will be provided to Senior Patrol Leaders at the Friday night SPL meeting just prior to the main event, or at the SPL meeting just prior to the derby start on Sat morning.

Specific details on some of the stations events obviously can not be listed

prior to the event. (Hint) Teamwork and a basic knowledge of First Class Scout skills will be very helpful.

2012

GENERAL INFORMATION

REGISTRATION: Complete the Camporee registration form. Mail to Jon Cerda by February 7 or bring it to January/ February Roundtable.

BOY SCOUTS will participate as Patrols working together participating in the various Klondike theme activities.

WEBELOS PARTICIPATION: The Webelos will be participating as Pack units and not as patrols or dens. The unit is encouraged to make a "Webelos Flag/ Banner for this event.

RECORD KEEPING: Each Boy Scout Troop and Webelos Unit must complete the enclosed Camporee attendance report.

A copy of this form must be turned in at registration with the staff.

Klondike 2012 RULES: The Scout Oath and Law shall be the code of conduct these days and always.

WATER: Bring water to the event. No water refilling may be available if they have turned off the hydrants.

"Above ground" fires are acceptable within contained or rock fire rings. Fire water bucket must be within 20 feet of fire and fire must be attended at all times.

TRASH: Practice low impact camping and take all trash home with you.

UNIFORMS: The Klondike Camporee is an official Scout function. All participants are requested to wear Klondike/ Rendezvous era clothing to enhance the overall old-time atmosphere. If you can not bring yourself to don an old time costume, then plan to wear class B uniforms throughout the event. Patrols (Webelos units) will be scored on uniforms or costume clothing at various Program Activity areas. Show your scout spirit & wear your jeans and flannels or uniform. DRESS WARM////// Layers.

 ALL STAFF MEMBERS WILL BE SETTING THE EXAMPLE BY BEING IN RENDEZVOUS ERA ATTIRE OR COMPLETE CLASS "A or B UNIFORMS FOR THE WEEKEND - BOTH SENIOR AND JUNIOR STAFF GROUPS. Of course warm clothing is allowed as an outer layer.

EVENTS: Program events will include:  TOMAHAWK THROWING, FIRE BUILDING, COOKING Demo, DISTRICT CAMPFIRE AND MORE..

FIREWORKS: Absolutely no fireworks are permitted to be used by Scouts.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES AND DRUGS: No beer or other intoxicating liquors are allowed. Also, no drugs other than those prescribed by a doctor are permitted. Anyone caught with or using alcohol or drugs will be required to leave. Anyone using illegal substances will be reported to the proper authorities" NO Tobacco in any program areas.

PARKING AND MOTOR VEHICLES: All motor vehicles will be parked in designated areas. No vehicles will be allowed in any program area campsite, except to unload and load equipment unless authorized by the Camporee committee. ANY DEVIATION FROM THESE RULES WILL RESULT IN THE VIOLATOR'S CAR BEING TOWED AT HIS EXPENSE - or horrendous verbal abuse.

 

RELIGIOUS OBSERVANCES: The twelfth point of the Scout law is "A scout is Reverent." All Scouts Webelos, Leaders and participants are expected to attend the religious service during the Camporee.

MEDICAL FORMS/ PERMISSION FOR EMERGENCY MEDICAL TREATMENT FORMS: All Units are responsible for keeping and maintaining medical forms and medical releases. ACCIDENTS   can and do happen. Be prepared.

LANTERNS: No flame type of lights should be allowed in any tents. Have your Scouts use flashlights & battery operated lanterns.

LIQUID FUELS: All fuels are to be handled by responsible adult leaders only. It is the Unit Leader’s responsibility to make sure that everyone -both adults and boys - follows this policy.

KNIVES: No "Bowie styled" or other type of sheath knife is allowed unless you are on staff and it is part of your Klondike attire. All Scouts and adults should use folding pocket knives only.

TRASH: The Bartle Reservation camping site is our home away from home. Please leave it cleaner than you found it. All trash should be contained in plastic bags and returned home with you. Leave no evidence that you camped in your assigned campsite.

INSPECTIONS / JUDGING: There will be a campsite inspection on Saturday afternoon. The score will be in your unit’s total points.

GATEWAYS: All Units should identify themselves at the front of their campsite in some manner. Troop flags are a minimum.

VISITORS: Visitors are welcome at the Klondike Event, and are encouraged to come to Campfire.

SANITARY FACILITIES: Please use the provided sanitary facilities for your body's needs.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS: Specially designed Klondike certificates (5) will be given for Troops excelling in Scout Spirit, teamwork, campsite cleanliness, and overall participation. Each pre-registered unit will receive embroidered patches which will be awarded along with beads of participation.

STAFF: Staff is an honor and your participation will be honored with the above awards, and a special staff coup or souvenir  for participation. The Lone Bear organizing committee requests that all staff members set the best of examples by leading their program, activities, judging, communication and participation in accordance with the Scout Oath and Law.

What to bring? A good attitude. A Scout is Cheerful.

 Starred items are mandatory in order to compete at stations.

*1 patrol rope. Min length 20 ft - Max 25 ft.

* Each patrol member will also need an additional piece of rope( commonly called a commando rope) sufficient to be tied around their belly, with a 2 ft long tag end. Ends must be fused or whipped. No frayed ends or loops are allowed.

 

At least one back pack for storing materials.

1 Scout handbook

Compass 1 per patrol

1 Small spiral note pad and pencil

Rain gear for each person

Sturdy shoes, NO open toed, sandals, clogs, etc.

* Water for drinking -  (1- 2 liter bottle for every 3 boys in the patrol)

* 1 first aid kit

* 1- 4 to 5 ft. cut from the tree walking staff per patrol member (have your name and troop number on it) go cut one in the woods. Do not bring commercially prepared,broom handle type staffs.

* I hand axe (hatchet) wrapped or leather sheath.

* I Bow saw (covered blade) Use piece of old slit hose over blade.

* 1 small bundle of firewood sufficient to start a small fire.

* Tinder (dry) and kindling for small fire. (Keep dry) in plastic bag.

* 1 hot Lunch for each person if you are eating on the trail (or pick up MRE at check-in.

* 1 small sealable bag ( gallon zip lock)
